We have a young childrens book that we have questioned someone to do some illustrations for. How much would be a honest price to pay them?
The girl is about 18 too – so I’m wondering if $500 would be too much?

percent of the royalties , is only honest.

Not a cent. I would find an aspiring artist who is an unknown but has talent, and I would offer them a chance to have their work published for free. But if you know the artist, or if s/he is already professional, you might want to work it out with hir.

  3. If you’re plotting to get the book accepted for publication, you have a better chance of getting published if you don’t already have an illustrator. If you have pictures, the publisher judges based on the pictures AND the text, but if you have just the text they can pick an illustrator they feel fits what they want to publish.

If you’re not looking for publication, I would reckon $50-$100 would be more than honest, especially if it’s an unknown illustrator. Just make sure you get a signed form saying you are now the copyright holder of the illustrations, so if you ever do choose to publish, you can.
