Why is harry potter in the kids section of book stores?
ByDan W questioned:
It made me feel really stupid when i went in there yesterday to buy book 6+7. I mean really they should at least be in the teen section. Not with small bear and cat in the hat books. hahah. I mean there super long, huge words that no 8-12 year olds are going to know without a dictionary, death, a small romance. etc. So why?

How many adults do you know that read HP obsessively like kids do? It’s all marketing.
Because before the movies came out and the puberty actors played the characters it was a children’s book and still is. And 8-12 year olds are still children. And you can read the books to a 6 and 7 yr ancient. What’s the huge deal?
cuz adults dont like fantasy and fun…. like kids do.
jking. i mean come on, how many adults have you seen reading harry potter books?
they have their reasons.
must’ve got no odr place =D
It is a children’s book but i agree it should be in the teen sections.
Because they’re fools who don’t check the content before shelving the books.
I’ve seen books in the kids section which ought to be in the adult section… full of bloody violence and ***…
But to be honest, I started reading Harry Potter when I was 6, so they could be right on that one.
I know. If I was six or seven, and I read the “NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU B*TCH!” part, I’d be like, “Mommy, what’s a b*tch?”. I probably also wouldn’t know a thing in the last few books, heck, I wouldn’t get book two. I guess it’s the fact that it started out when he was 11. Then, all of a sudden, BAM!!!!!!!! YA ranking. I guess they figure if it starts out for kids, it should end that way. The least they could do is place half of it in the YA section.
becuz they were orginaly ment for childern lol most people dont no that
I know! It makes me really upset, especially when the New York times really separated Harry Potter book from the rest of the best-sellers and made a new list for “children” books. >:-(
It is considered a children’s or teens book, but I am a long way from either and I am currently reading the series again. When I went to buy The Order of the Phoenix on the day it came out, 3 of the 5 women in the checkout line were buying it for themselves.
There was only one kid, about middle school age. I finished up explaining to him that Hermione wasn’t going to be Harry’s girlfriend, the reasons why she had run and hugged Harry, but shook hands with Ron (after being revived from petrification), and that Harry was going to first go with Cho Chang, but would probably eventually end up with Ginny.
It was kind of fascinating that most of the people were adults. One lady was embarrassed about the fact that she was buying it for herself until she heard another lady and me saying we were.
Ugh I so get the feeling. When I tried to read the Pendragon series they were in the kids section and I was like…uh….I’ll just get it later. Anywho, it really doesn’t matter though. Harry potter is enjoyable for a lot of different ages. At my library, the series are in the junior section, the young adult section and the adult section. If the kid can know and read it, then I say go for it. And if you really want to read, don’t let that stop you.
Im 10 and finished the whole series. I understood it. It’s not next to small bear and elmo its next to series of unfortunate events etc. There are terrible words I see whatchya mean such as the b words and the f word in the last book.
Because it was originally written for, and marketed to, children. As for the huge words, I’ve known several kids in the 8-12 range that would have no distress reading them.
They did also release more adult oriented copies with less childish covers, but many stores just place them all together. And I reckon those versions were usually only available when the book was first released.
The series was originally written for children 9-12. Even though the series aged into YA for the last 3-4 books, stores place the series together. As for the series being too advanced, my 11 year ancient had read the entire series and understands it.

Um, first off, there are hundreds of kids out there who have huge that can comprehend words for their age. I’ve seen first graders at our school read those, take a test on them, and pass. The books should be allowed to be read by anyone because who knows, if they’re younger, that doesn’t mean they’re not mature enough to read it.
As for your Q, they are in there because so many kids are reading them, not just adults or teenagers. If you don’t want to walk into a bookstore and go into the childrens’ section to get a copy of 6 and 7, then just go to the adult section. They make HP books with covers specifically for adults, and you can check bookstores to see if they do that.
It appeals to everyone in the world, not just adults.
Because the book is for adults and children but children don’t often look in adults sections
The first three books were largely geared toward children. After that, I reckon they belong in the teen section, but they have to keep the series together.
