Charlie Parker Played Be-Bop is our all-time favorite. Super-fun to read out loud. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a close second.
Then … Black on White/White on Black, anything by Eric Carle, Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Gorilla, Pat the Bunny, The Skin You’re In …
The list is too long! A excellent way to start is to just sit down in the board-book section of the bookstore, and find things YOU like to look at and read. Your baby will let you know soon enough what he’s interested in. (My oldest LOVED looking at Chicka Chicka Boom Boom when he was just a few weeks ancient. And my youngest clearly preferred White on Black to Black on White.)

When I was a kid I loved reading the Barenstein Bears, Where the Wild Things Are, and we had this clean set of books that went through the alphabet (like the first book was A and then in the book it had a tale that used a bunch of things starting with the letter A). I also had a series of Max and Sam books that were very simple small books “Sit Max. Max Sat.” I also had a book of fairy tales (geared towards children) that I really liked.

Reading is my 17-month-ancient daughter’s favorite activity. She really loved Where the Wild Things Are, Pleased Toes Pleased Feet, Won’t You Be My Kissaroo, Daisy and the Egg, How Does a Dinosaur Say Goodnight, and a book full of nursery rhymes. Small Golden Books are fantastic too… we got some about God and it’s cute when she says God or Jesus.

My advice is to get books from the public library – this is so much cheaper than buying a ton of books. It’s like testing driving books. When she really likes something then you can get it for her. Just make sure you return the books, or renew them online so you don’t incur fees.

My kids are all in their 30’s now and they have this book too as they loved it when they were younger .. I read it so much we went through 3 books:)

Stand back said the Elephant, I’m going to sneeze! by Patricia Thomas and if you read with gusto you will have your son rolling in the floor, or bed, or couch which ever the case may be:)

The best thing you can do for your child’s education is to read to them. Forget about what to read, just read!
My personal favorites were the Dr. Seuss books, Disney tales, and nursery rhymes.
WATCH OUT for ancient fairy tales as they tend to be very violent and disturbing!!!
