I like to buy goofy books, and my son Likes them! We have a lot of Dr Seuss, Walter the ******* Dog, and his favorite right now….”I Like You, Stinky Face”! He’s 19 months. I’m 34. ;p

All the childhood classics, fairy tale ones.. especially from the Grimms brothers, Roald Dahl, pop up ones. (really fun when your small)

these are fantastic tales, may not be ‘educational’ but they are fantastic for a small girls!

I just look for a excellent tale, whether it be amusing, serious, nonsense, or whatever. My daughter likes books…and to be read to. So, knowing she’ll like just about anything…I pick something I won’t mind reading over and over again. And it must have fantastic illustrations!

I read a variety of different books to my kids. Really depends on what they are going through at the time for me. My son (3yrs) likes a excellent book with nice illustrations and a fun tale. He likes when the characters in the book do silly things. Makes him laugh . . or maybe its mommy being silly that makes him laugh . . either way he likes them. As I mentioned, my son likes a fun tale and excellent illustrations, if they are about his favourite subject at the time even better. Right now his favourite thing is butterflies and dinosaurs. Fascinating combination, but either one of those will always be a winner. So if I see a book that has something he is interested in at the time and it looks like a well done book I will pick it up for him. Sometimes I grab him books that are educational. He has a few books that have the ABC’s and 123′s done in an entertaining way. But the above books are certainly his favourite type.

My daughter is only 19 months at the moment. So we stick to books that have bright and fun illustrations as well as a small tale about her favourite subject. Right now she likes butterflies and kitties. So if I can find a tale about a butterfly or a cat she is thrilled. She looses interest easily so it has to be honestly small and very entertaining.

I’ll buy them anything they want, as long as it’s vaguely age appropriate. Naturally I’m not going to buy my 8 y/o a book of ****** poetry, but small of that, anything. My only other exception is that I won’t buy anything that’s despise-based or that pushes all that fire-and-damnation evangelical stuff.
If they’re not with me on bookstore runs or it’s for a present, I usually look at what they’ve been reading, talk to them about the books we read together and they read on their own, then look for things that have something in common. Very few books go unread or unfinished using that method.

I delight in reading them nearly anything.

My 5 year ancient son likes me to read chapter books, he likes make belief, dragons, maps and animals. He has a chapter a night. We have read all of Roald Dahl, C.S.Lewis, A.A. Milne, Lewis Carroll and recently a book called the Mapmakers Monsters, which he loved, it was the monsters, map and adventure that made me choose it. Occasionally I will pick up a book that I reckon he will like like Gulliver’s Travels, A Wrinkle in Time or Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, but he wasn’t interested in any of them and questioned me to pick a different book.

I wanted my kids to like and prefer excellent books, so I went with Caldecott winners when they were small (because they loved the imaginative pictures) and Newberry winners for the tales as they got older. Beyond that you just follow their interests. My kids both liked tales with lots of imagination and a sense of humor.

When my kids were younger (and even still for my 6 year ancient) I read a lot of shel silverstein. Amusing pics, fantastic rhymes.. they always got a laugh (although, the giving tree brings some tears, too).
I like the classics. Dr. Seuss included. One of my favorites as a child was The Poky Small Puppy. I make sure their bookshelves are stocked with my childhood favorites, as well.
Anything that looks like it might draw interest from my child is a excellent book for me to get.
