name of a childrens book about ancient rome?

I cant remember the name of a book i read years and years ago. It was a childrens book about ancient Rome.

It detailed the lives of the people who collected the snails that were crushed to make the purple dye that coloured the emporors family’s clothing.

I reckon the title had the word purple in it somewhere.
