If you are going to write a traditional narrative, such as a fairytale, you need to deccide the moral. Then you need a villain and a hero. If you are going to write to teach an academic skill, decide what you are going to teach first, such as what Eric Carle's stories, teach Days of the Week, furits, etc. Decide what audience you are writing for, is it very young chidren, elementary aged children or older. Then read some children's lit, go to Border's have coffee and readd for a while. If you are writing for a young audience you need minimal language on the page, and very colorful illustrations.
