Why do native english speaking american kids score less than non-native speaking kids in reading?

Recently, Oprah had a show about America’s education. It brings us back to reality. America needs a revival in the educational system because kids from third-world countries score higher than American kids in reading english and mathemathics.

I’m sure it’s the fact that we are taught slang and everyday (prose) language. They, but, are taught the grammatical rules and spellings.Chances are, it’s the same for any language.
If one is not properly trained to speak the language then they won’t know how to read it either.
for one thing,americans are spoiled. it’s right. people come here from other countries and they work harder than most americans because we are complacent.
