Do your kids have a math packet and reading to do over the summer?
ByMy Four Girls questioned:
In our school system, children entering grades 1-12 get a summer math packet, and reading. The older kids also have book reports to complete on the books. Does your school system have this? How do you feel about it?

no and if i ever had to do that i would pi** on the paper and turn that in
I agree with the guy above me
No, but my sister who goes to a different school had a reading and history project to do over the summer, I reckon that its stupid, summer is to relax from the pressures of school, not stress out about a project or packet.
No, my teacher gave us the option. Everyone except one girl (and they call ME a nerd) threw theirs away.
Our school doesn’t but I personally thinks its a excellent thought.
Most beginner readers tend to go a small backwards if they don’t stay in practice.
For it to be required though I do reckon is a bit ridiculous.
In high school some of the advanced classes had summer work. It sucked, but I suppose it helped me do something educational over the summer. Having that long of a break with no educational activities is really detrimental to their learning. Nearly the first month of back to school is spent reviewing what they learned the previous year. In fact, many schools are switching to an all year calandar, that incorporates several long weekends and several 2-3 week breaks rather than one large 3 month break.
The summer break was primarily because parents pulled their children out during the planting season to help on the farm. So much so, that school was cancelled because having the kids help on the farm was sooo vital.
Most families today arent running their own farm, and would never dream of pulling their children out, even if they did have a farm. And since that long break is really terrible for them, more people are open to things like this. The reasoning for the summer packet of work is the same as for year round schooling.
No one is saying kids should spend their summer not having fun. They should absolutely have fun. But they will also learn more, and quicker, if they keep their skills up while they are having fun.
I applaud any school district that encourages children to continue to stretch their minds over the summer. It has been proven that children loose reading comprehension and fluency over long school breaks.
Call me an ogre, but I still require my children to read daily throughout summer vacation. Every outing is a chance to practice math skills from figuring the change at a quick food restaurant to determing which laundry soap or toilet paper is really the better buy. My son attends summer school at my request in an attempt to keep him at grade level. My daughter completes 4H projects in a variety of areas that keep her focused, connected and interested.
After all, it isn’t the schools responsibility to instill a like of learning in my child, it is mine. If I am not preparing them to be responsible adults, then I am not doing my job.
