The learning center that I work at is having a summer reading contest between the students and the instructors. We are trying to reckon of prizes that we can give the kids whenever they read a certain number of books, but we have not been able to reckon of anything excellent. All we can get are food coupons from local eateries, but we want to offer something different. Any thoughts?

Give them books! Books are an extremely excellent time, folks!!!

Eragon is extraordinarily well loved with 12 year ancient boys. What age are you working with?

My daughter and son both say the Redwall books (first one is Redwall) are the best books they ever read. My soccer playing musician son LOVED Redwall, read it repeatedly.

What ages are you dealing with? Different books for different ages, you know.

    Books!
or give pretend “Money” for the amount of pages/books (depending on the level) Then have a mini store that sells books, bookmarks, pencils, food coupons, etc… Kids like choices!

    Have fun!

Or if you do field trips, take the group who reads X amount of books/pages depending on the age, out for bowling or mini-golf!~ CN

Yo could give small book, coloring books, art supplies, small cany such as mini candy bars, or stickers! Be creative. It would depend on your budget, really but these are excellent for small budgets.

Movie passes or gift cards for quick food restaurants would be fantastic! Don’t forget to check with local amusement parks too! You can also check with local businesses like Outback, Applebees, etc. they will often give teachers stacks of giftcards for free appetizers or kid’s meals.

Pencil toppers, book marks, ice cream, a free book, small toys you get at the dollar store, etc.

The kids don’t really care about coupons…unless they are 16 years ancient or more.

I know this has been said before (and will be said again, I’m sure): BOOKS!!!!

I’ve had too many children come to me as first graders who own NO books of their own, and they have never had a book that belonged in their home.

Local dollar stores have nice small cheapie gifts to give away for those first incentives. I like the thought of giving books as everyone else has suggested. Barnes and Noble is giving away a book if you list 8 books you’ve read. You can pick up a bunch of those and have them available at the center as well.
